Coda bulletOur Clients...

Here is a mini case study of one of our recent clients we have engaged.

arrowAustech Petroleum Services Pty Ltd

Austech Petroleum Services is a second generation family business owned by the Raymond family. Austech provides products and services to the petroleum and environmental industry—namely, the design and installation of product storage and handling services, and remediation and decommissioning solutions for contaminated sites.

Austech is an innovative company that is growing rapidly. The key competitive advantage they have is their relationships with their clients and suppliers—in fact the entire value chain. This advantage is a product of the values that the Raymond's believe emanate from their family culture. But for anyone who belongs to a family (and who doesn't !) you will be familiar with the potential for emotional conflict. Well, add a family business, a sucession plan, a balance sheet and a few spouses to this equation and things can get out of hand fast.

What were they looking for?
The Raymond's were by no means a typical family in crisis, infact they weren't in crisis at all. But they had identified that if they didn't look forward and plan for the family it would likely take a very different course—quite likely an unwanted one. The Raymond's wanted to:
list_bulletSupport their long term growth
list_bulletAchieve harmony between the family and their family business
list_bulletIdentify and deal with certain issues and concerns
list_bulletBring the family closer together

"This is why Austech's potential is so great; rather than react to their current dilemma they took the time to plan and strategise a long-term road map."

The directors of Austech were referred to Self Made by Family Business Australia. We had just developed ArtiFac, a "Next Generation" family business process in conjunction with Dispute Solutions. ArtiFac is a world first synthesis of performing arts techniques, management tools and dispute resolution methods designed to: (a) improve prospects for achieving an amicable and constructive solution to most types of family business problems and, (b) increase the likelihood that any agreement struck and commitments made will be adhered to in the long term. We were delighted to be involved with the Raymond's. Following a number of meetings with the key stakeholders we set about designing a program for the family that would deliver their requirements.

What was the outcome?
Well, why don't we let Austech speak for themselves. Here are some statements they made about the ArtiFac process at the FBA National Conference in Hobart this year.

Raymond Family-"what we achieved was life changing"

"The Artifac process provided us with a:
list_bullet"Deeper understanding of ourselves and our family."
list_bullet"Better appreciation of relationships with family members."
list_bullet"Perspectives and tools that provide essential balance "
list_bullet"Ability to Manage the positive and negative aspects of our relationships and business dealings."
list_bullet"Understanding how our values and beliefs influence our actions"
list_bullet"Capacity to appreciate the power of the past on the present"
list_bullet"Better understanding of our family dynamics"
list_bullet"Learned tools and techniques for self-reflection, self-analysis and self-awareness"
list_bullet"Strengthening of trust and faith "

And finally a statement from one of the directors:

“The development of a constitution for a family business - without experiencing the ArtiFac process - would result in a cold, un-meaningful, sterile document, that would have no meaning or understanding of the beliefs and values that are entrenched within our family.” Ross Raymond, Director of Austech Petroleum Services
